Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In spring 2024, in preparation for summer events and the community's annual Fourth of July celebrations (parades and picnics), NMU decided not to provide plastic bottles of water. Instead, we partnered with a local brewery, Barrel + Beam (also an alumni-owned business) to put water in aluminum cans, which are more recyclable and have a lower carbon footprint. The cost for 7,000 cans of locally sourced and NMU-branded water is $4,200 - only $200 more than the same number of plastic water bottles.
