Does the institution host a peer-to-peer textbook exchange program, textbook lending library, or alternate textbook project?:
Yes

A brief description of the textbook exchange program, textbook lending library, or alternate textbook project:

In 2024 the University approved the creation of Textbook Little Libraries across campus. This was a student-proposed Green Fund project. A Little Free Library is a “take one, leave one” system. Students bring textbooks they longer use and leave them in this library and take any books they may need for a future or current course. There is currently a textbook little library in the College of Health and Human Performance lobby, the lobby of Jamrich Hall (main instructional building) next to Starbucks and we are building out the shelves and design for another textbook library in the Lodge (main community area of the residence halls). There is funding for the building/implementation of two more Textbook Little Libraries and plans are for these to be completed in fall 2024.

Does the institution provide incentives for academic staff that explicitly encourage the authorship, peer review, and/or adoption of open access textbooks?:
Yes

A brief description of the incentives to encourage the authorship, peer review, and/or adoption of open access textbooks:

The OER Faculty Learning Community is premised on the belief that using open educational resources benefits both students and faculty in a number of ways that are consistent with NMU’s mission to be creative, inclusive, and sustainable.

OER FLC members will be given a $1500 stipend and a community of support to find, incorporate, or create OER.

Each faculty member selected to be part of an OER Faculty Learning Community cohort will be expected to:

  • Adopt or adapt OER materials for at least one course which would reduce the overall cost for the course, and commit to using OER for that course for the next two times it is offered.

  • Attend at least one OER professional development activity or Learning Community event per semester, either held by NMU or a recommended external virtual event.

  • Give a presentation to share their OER experience by presenting at internal departmental meetings, CTL programs, or regional and/or national conferences.
