Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
At Northern, we provide countless opportunities for experiential learning to help reinforce lessons from the classroom.Whether in the student-initiated permaculture garden on campus, studying abroad or presenting at a professional conference, students learn skills and knowledge to address environmental challenges.
Specific immersive experiences are part of the University's Faculty-Led Study Abroad (FLSA) program. Programs include a brand new International Sustainable Business course offered in France and explores best practices for sustainable business development from Paris to the Alps. Other ongoing programs include the Biology Department's summer field study on conservation biology in Zambia, and a co-led immersive experience in Brazil, where Biology and Environmental Science professors lead students in learning about different dimensions of sustainable forestry.
Northern also offers several alternative spring break options where students can do environmental service-learning projects. Communications professors have also led students to learn about environmental communications in Brazil, and there is a field course on ecotourism in Costa Rica, led by Health and Human Performance faculty. College of Business and Environmental Studies faculty co-teach field courses on climate change resilience and sustainable development in Cuba.
