Northern started its institutional membership with AASHE in 2016 after students and a faculty member attended the AASHE conference in Minneapolis, MN in 2015. NMU has continued its institutional membership ever since and staff, faculty, and students have used the resources available to us on AASHE's website.

Does the institution actively participate in a regional, state/provincial, or local higher education sustainability network?:

NMU is a member of the Energy Engineers subcommittee of the Michigan Association of Physical Plant Administrators, which is a committee composed of plant engineers from universities throughout Michigan. This committee meets up to twice a year for 4 to 8 hour session to discuss energy saving and sustainability initiatives that have been completed at community colleges or universities in Michigan and across the country and to share knowledge around energy savings.

Individual faculty members have presented sustainability research at conferences, but not necessarily on behalf of Northern Michigan University.

NMU EcoReps presented at AASHE on how to utilize campus resources and build sustainable relationships, while Sarah and Marissa presented on recruitment and retention in student led sustainability programs

Dr. Jessica Thompson of NMU serves on the board of directors for the Michigan Energy Options, regional nonprofit - https://michiganenergyoptions.org/

Dr. Sarah Mittlefehldt serves on the advisory board for the National Alliance for Green Heat, a national organization that advances cleaner and more efficient residential heating technology, particularly for low and middle-income families.

Members of the Sustainability Advisory Council have begun conversations with Jay Meldrum, the Executive Director of Sustainability at Michigan Technological University, about how we can continue to collectively improve our campus sustainability effort here on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
