Total percentage of the institution’s employees that use more sustainable commuting options as their primary method of transportation:
12.89

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting, including the timeframe for when the analysis was conducted and how a representative sample was reached, if applicable:

On November of 2016, a student in GC 269: Introduction to Sustainability worked with the co-chair of Northern's Sustainability Advisory Council to develop and administer a survey on transportation habits of students, staff, and faculty at Northern Michigan University. A total of 1,232 people responded to the survey, which was a representative fraction of the total student and employee population at Northern Michigan University. There are two objectives that were targeted for response in the survey. The first objective was to calculate a percentage of NMU students and employees that commute by sustainable and non-sustainable modes of transportation to campus. The second objective determined what factors based on the results are associated with student and employee transportation mode choice, specifically looking at biking over driving to campus. The factors associated are living on-campus or off-campus, distance to school, and Marquette transportation infrastructure such as bike lanes or roads.

The percentage of the institution's employees that use each of the following modes as their primary means of transportation to and from campus::
Percentage (0-100)
Commute with only the driver in the vehicle (excluding motorcycles and scooters) 87.11
Walk, bicycle, or use other non-motorized means 7.44
Vanpool or carpool 4.87
Take a campus shuttle or public transportation 0.58
Use a motorcycle, scooter or moped 0
Telecommute for 50 percent or more of their regular work hours 0
