The University follows OSHA’s Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs with assistance from the Department of Environmental Health and Safety and the Office of Research Compliance, Integrity and Safety. Key components typically include:
- Periodic review and update of the NIU Health and Safety Policy that demonstrates leadership support
- Management and employee participation and engagement in departmental safety committees
- Development of policies and procedures
- Training assessment development and implementation
- Incident reporting and investigation response
- Risk assessment framework to identify, prioritize, and mitigate hazards
- Safety audits to evaluate and monitor program compliance
