NIU has had a designated part-time campus sustainability coordinator since July 2021. As this is a new position, their accomplishments have been limited to working on baseline metrics of sustainability (e.g. greenhouse gas inventory, STARS report, etc), grant writing (e.g. EPA grant for anaerobic digestors for campus food waste), and future sustainability planning.
Additionally, NIU operates the Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability (NICCS). This is a research center that facilitates research and community engagement related to sustainability in our region. https://www.niu.edu/niccs/index.shtml

The NIU Sustainability Coordinator will work with faculty, staff, students, and the NIU administration to develop and advance sustainability initiatives across campus. Specifically, the Coordinator will work to develop a STARS report for the university (https://stars.aashe.org), coordinate and update NIU’s greenhouse gas inventory, and develop other initiatives such as Tree Campus USA. The Coordinator will be supported by a ten-hour a week student assistant, they will be paid one-month summer salary, and receive one course release throughout the academic year.
