The Environmental Caucus is representative of the Office of Sustainability and is the primary avenue for public input and engagement around campus sustainability initiatives. The Caucus is committed to connecting the NAU and Flagstaff communities through sharing information between NAU and the Flagstaff community to discuss sustainability strategies. The Caucus is open to the community and meets monthly from 12:00 pm to 1:15 pm.

Office of Sustainability: At the Flagstaff campus, students live, learn, eat, play, make purchases, use energy, and participate in every possible aspect of life—NAU is a micro-community! As such, NAU has the opportunity to demonstrate to larger cities, the nation, and the world what a truly healthy and sustainable environment can look like. The Office of Sustainability is an integral part of the NAU culture. Our mission is to create, maintain and enhance our campus through continuous improvement and sustainable practices. Our vision is to be a leading university for sustainability and inclusivity by creating forward-thinking, impactful, and resourceful leaders. Our objective is to showcase a living laboratory where students study and participate in the development of social equity, economic stability, and environmental stewardship. The Office of Sustainability is comprised of our Chief Sustainability Officer, Sustainability Manager, Data and Reporting Analyst, Conservation Programs Manager, and two dedicated graduate student workers.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
The University Sustainability Advisory Board (USAB) is comprised of key student, staff, faculty and community stakeholders tasked with providing the President and President’s cabinet with recommended policies, strategic investments, and university actions to advance sustainability and reach carbon neutrality by 2030 and beyond. The USAB mission will be to facilitate and promote the effective integration and implementation of sustainability and climate action across all aspects of NAU.
The goals of the USAB will 1) advance policies, practices and investments to implement the 2022 University Climate and Sustainability Action Plan to reach carbon neutrality by 2030, 2) provide an accountability structure for climate and sustainability action implementation, 3) provide a forum for problem solving and enhancing campus-wide sustainability synergies through collaboration, 4) create a culture of sustainability where the entire campus community is engaged in, aware of, and committed to advancing sustainability through operations, research, teaching, and community partnerships, 5) support sustainability ESG benchmarking and reporting through STARS.

A newly created position within the Graduate Student Government starting in 2019, the Climate director has planned an integral role in the Climate Action Planning process, the Living Energy dashboard, Green Fund Weather Station project, and has served on the Coordinating Committee for Sustainability (CoCoSus).
