Northern Arizona University (NAU) has been actively pursuing sustainability initiatives to create a greener and more environmentally responsible campus. The 2019 Grant from Club Car allowed NAU to outline a comprehensive plan for the shift to more sustainable transportation options.
Since then, to test the viability of electric vehicles on campus, NAU introduced two Pickman E-trucks for use in the grounds and general maintenance shops. Additionally, two E-bikes have been made available to the Planning, Design, and Construction staff, as well as 8 E-bikes that are available to all facilities workers. These pilot projects demonstrated the practicality and benefits of using electric vehicles for various transportation needs. In 2023, the acquisition of an electric vehicle, a Nissan Leaf, by the Fleet Motor Pool reinforces NAU's ongoing commitment to electrifying our fleet.
In collaboration with the Northern Arizona Intergovernmental Public Transportation Authority (NAIPTA), NAU was a part of a substantial federal grant amounting to 17.3 million dollars. This grant aimed to update the downtown transit connection center, thereby increasing ridership and funding an electric bus to be utilized on route 10, a route primarily traversing the campus and frequently used by students. Student ridership of Route 10 is at an all-time high, and we're thankful to NAIPTA for this opportunity to promote and utilize public transit options.
Moreover, the university's Sustainability Action Plan underlines its dedication to decreasing NAU vehicle emissions each year. By actively pursuing the purchase of the most economical, fuel-efficient, and low-emission vehicles that meet operational needs and policy requirements, NAU demonstrates its commitment to sustainable transportation choices.
With an array of successful sustainability initiatives, NAU has proven its dedication to creating a more sustainable campus and community. By embracing innovative solutions, fostering collaboration, and supporting green initiatives, the university continues to lead by example in the pursuit of a more environmentally conscious future.
