In 2021 NAU released a new policy for Staff Community Engagement Time:

The policy grants eligible university employees paid time off to engage in volunteer services for community organizations. The policy applies to regular employees, including Administrators, Classified Staff, and Service Professionals. However, student workers, graduate assistants, part-time temporary faculty, and part-time temporary staff are not eligible for this benefit.

Regular employees, both full-time and part-time, are allowed up to 16 hours of paid time off for community engagement per calendar year. The time off must be taken in increments of at least 2 hours. It's important to note that community engagement time is not considered as work time for Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) purposes, overtime, or compensatory time. The time off for volunteer activities should take place during the employee's standard work week and is not covered by worker's compensation.

To utilize community engagement time, employees must assist a non-profit, non-partisan community organization recognized as an IRS Code 501(c)(3) agency, or a licensed/accredited human service organization serving individuals with special needs. Political or religious activities are not eligible for community engagement leave, although non-religious community outreach activities of religious organizations, such as food distribution for a local food bank, are allowed.
