A brief description of programs, policies, infrastructure investments, outreach efforts, and/or other factors that contributed to the diversion rate for construction and demolition waste:
Northern Arizona University’s current policy requires all major renovation and new construction projects to achieve LEED Gold certification. This requirement ensures that all large-scale projects will establish specific waste diversion goals and strategies, create a tracking mechanism for all major waste streams associated with the project, and divert at least 50% of the project’s total construction and demolition waste.
Northern Arizona University has also initiated a waste tracking program within the Planning, Design and Construction department to encourage higher waste diversion rates for both major and minor renovation and construction projects. *In May 2016, new Technical Standards go into effect which will require contractors to identify waste diversion opportunities and report waste and recycling figures for all construction and renovation projects.
