Does the institution have an ongoing program that offers incentives for academic staff in multiple disciplines or departments to develop new sustainability courses and/or incorporate sustainability into existing courses? :
Yes
A brief description of the incentive program(s):
Through the Global Learning Initiative (GLI), faculty may earn a stipend for working on developing GLI plans for their departments. The role of the faculty member is to begin developing a plan for integration of sustainability, global awareness, and diversity into the curriculum of their specific department and then bring other faculty on board.
The Global Learning Initiative established three university-level thematic student learning outcomes for Northern Arizona University on Sustainability, Diversity Education, and Global Engagement that were to be developed and articulated at the program level for all undergraduate academic majors and the university’s Liberal Studies (liberal/general education) Program. GLI’s university-level Sustainability outcome established that “Students will acquire the skills and knowledge base to understand the importance of and options for sustainability in local and global terms. Students will also acquire an understanding of the range of ethical perspectives concerning the uses of natural resources and the impact of these perspectives on creating a sustainable relationship to the natural environment.” To date, programs listed under AC-2 Learning Outcomes have developed program-level Sustainability student learning outcomes as part of their completed work in the Global Learning Initiative.
