A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
The NAIT Boreal Research Institute (NBRI) is an applied research centre of NAIT and a partnership of industry, education and the community.
NBRI is organized into five program areas, each with an Applied Research Scientist in charge.
- Boreal Forest Education
- Forest Reclamation
- Peatland Restoration
- Plant & Seed Technologies
- Technology Transfer
The Peatland Restoration program was initiated in 2013. Peatlands are sensitive ecosystems that cover much of the boreal region in Alberta. Working with industry and external research collaborators, NAIT Boreal Research Institute is a leader in Canada in the restoration of sensitive peatlands that have been exposed to industrial activities. The goal of this program is to provide small- to medium-sized (SME) reclamation enterprises and their oil and gas clientele with cost-effective solutions for re-integrating abandoned industrial sites into surrounding peatlands, taking into consideration hydrology, civil earth work, peatland ecology, and the government standards O&G companies need to meet to achieve certification.
