The green building guidelines or policies:
2.2 Sustainability Design Goals
All new university building projects and major renovation projects will strive to meet the goals of LEED Platinum with Gold certification as a minimum unless otherwise directed by the NU Planner and Project Management Team.
When applicable, all new university building projects, major renovation projects, and site renovation projects will strive to meet the minimum requirements of SITES unless otherwise directed by the NU Planner and Project Management Team.
Do the green building guidelines or policies cover the following?:
Yes or No | |
Impacts on the surrounding site (e.g. guidelines to reuse previously developed land, protect environmentally sensitive areas, and otherwise minimize site impacts) | Yes |
Energy consumption (e.g. policies requiring a minimum level of energy efficiency for buildings and their systems) | Yes |
Building-level energy metering | Yes |
Use of environmentally preferable materials (e.g. guidelines to minimize the life cycle impacts associated with building materials) | Yes |
Indoor environmental quality (i.e. guidelines to protect the health and comfort of building occupants) | Yes |
Water consumption (e.g. requiring minimum standards of efficiency for indoor and outdoor water use) | Yes |
Building-level water metering | Yes |
A brief description of the green building guidelines or policies and/or a list or sample of buildings covered:
In 2006, Northeastern adopted a LEED certification requirement for all new construction or major renovation projects (50,000 sf or more). The University has since upgraded our standards requiring all new buildings to meet LEED Gold standard. The recently completed Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is certified LEED Gold achieving energy savings of 78% over a typical lab building and includes a triple glazed curtain wall, a “solar veil”, to significantly reduce heat gain.
None
A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
Northeastern University employs a Director of Commissioning whose responsibility includes the adherence to our standards. Additionally, project managers meet with sustainability staff and others to integrate sustainability designs and elevate best practices from the beginning of project to close.
