Climate Justice Project

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:

This project seeks to build bridges between our disciplines to help faculty incorporate climate justice and civic engagement into their core curriculum, in ways that empower students and encourages student retention and success. Faculty who take part in a Climate Justice Institute, or Workshop, will design an assignment, lesson, or module, that weaves climate justice and civic engagement into one or more of their classes. This project at North Seattle College is thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation, and additional support from the Office of Instruction and the Office for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at North Seattle College.

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:

The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a National Science Foundation funded program whose purpose is to strengthen the preparation, representation and success of historically underrepresented* students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors.

Through this program, strategic partnerships- referred to as “Alliances”- are created between local colleges, universities, and other educational institutions to provide academic preparation and career coaching to these dedicated students.

“Alliances” exist across the country, connecting LSAMP students to support systems, research and funding opportunities, and a community of like-minded peers and mentors. At North Seattle College, we are part of an alliance with Green River College and Pierce College called the LSAMP Puget Sound Alliance.to meet ambitious objectives for increasing enrollment, completion and transfer of historically underrepresented students in STEM. Activities will include an overarching commitment to expanding Undergraduate Research Experiences (UREs) as an evidence-based strategy for supporting improved educational outcomes for under-represented STEM students. NSC is the lead institution on this grant which also includes Green River and Pierce Colleges.
