North is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), which empowers higher education faculty, administrators, staff and students to be effective change agents and drivers of sustainability innovation.
North is pursuing the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS) by AASHE, which is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance.

Seattle Colleges District Sustainability Coordinator served on the WOHESC 2021 and WOHESC 2022 conference planning committee.

A brief description of the mentoring relationship and activities:
The District Sustainability Coordinator has participated in the AASHE mentorship program the past 2 years, both as a mentoree and mentor.
Another way the NSC participates in an ongoing mentor relationship is with its partner campuses. All campuses plan time to evaluate one another's STARS submission and develop each program. Many benchmarks (e.g., GHG) are set by either the State or at District, so all campuses work together to create consistent data. The primary forum for check-ins occurs at a district sustainability meeting every quarter.
Has the institution had employees or students serving as peer reviewers of another institution’s sustainability data and/or STARS submission during the previous three years?:
A brief description of the peer review activities:
Seattle Colleges District Sustainability Coordinator reviewed Bellevue College's AASHE STARS submission in 2020, meeting requirements for PA 4: Reporting Assurance and IN: External Reporting Assurance.
Additionally, in 2020-2021, the Seattle Colleges District Sustainability Coordinator participated in a WAHESC sub-group, who met monthly to discuss best practices and help each other trouble shoot our AASHE STARS submissions.
A brief description of other inter-campus collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year :
The Cap & Gown Recycling Program started with the inaugural Seattle College's Commencement 2017 ceremony at Safeco Field, which includes North Seattle College, Seattle Central College, and South Seattle College graduates. Over one hundred caps and gowns were collected and recycled in 2017 and the program continues to grow. The NSC Sustainability office steam sanitizes them in order to be used again by next cohort of students who can rent the gowns and caps and then return them.
