AFFORDABLE TRANSPORTATION
North Seattle College participates on the Seattle Colleges’ District Transportation Committee. The District Transportation Committee is committed to lowering the costs of public transportation for our students, and has been working with the City of Seattle and King County for several years to improve the public transportation card for students. Recent success includes students being able to obtain a $250 stocked ORCA card (covers most public transit options in Seattle) for $125-available for purchase once/quarter.
FREE TUITION
Our President is actively advocating for college affordability, an initiative that is being fought as part of a local, state and national campaign. The program initially began as the 13th year promise scholarship, supporting students on the south end of Seattle at our sister campus, South Seattle College. The program has now been expanded to the North Seattle College. https://northseattle.edu/13th-year. FREE TUITION
On Feb 26, 2016, President Brown and the Research & Advocacy Board (RAB) joined the state-wide Rally, uniting their voices with students from other WA state community colleges at the Capitol in Olympia. As in prior years, community college students are asking legislator to lower tuition and textbook costs. RAB met with Rep. Gerry Pollet, Rep. Noel Frame, and Sen. Carlyle’s assistant Kate Hoffman. North’s student leaders spent time with each lawmaker to talk about the difficulties of paying tuition, juggling school, work, and family, and asked for support with the long-term goal of making community college free.
The following link is the public hearing session to the House Higher Education Committee where North Seattle College and South Seattle College Presidents are advocating for the free tuition bill, dubbed House Bill 1840-the Promise Scholarship. IMMIGRATION All community colleges within the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges signed the attached letter addressed to President Trump advocating for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
CLIMATE POLICY On December 19, 2016, Second Nature helped organize a national effort of a diverse group of Higher Education Institutions in a letter to the new Congressional delegation and incoming Presidential transition team stating that we continue to support the Paris Climate Agreement, with or without them. North Seattle College President, along with other the other colleges within the Seattle Colleges District, signed the letter. The letter begins by stating we, "recognize our academic and ethical responsibilities to current and future generations to take aggressive climate action; to reduce our sector’s carbon pollution, to support interdisciplinary climate education, and to continue research that expands our understanding of rapidly changing earth systems." Over 235 senior leaders in higher education responded to the call to action. Since then, Second Nature has worked with partners to create a new public site for this letter that demonstrates its alignment with over 1,750 business leaders under the banner of We Are Still In. With this initiative, we hope to show that support for Climate Leadership comes from many sectors and that the message is clear: threats to progress are real, solutions are important and feasible, and we need to act now. http://secondnature.org/higher-education-climate-action-letter/
