A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
Over the last 3 years, student (now-former) Dennis Skarr retrofitted an exercise bike in the NSCC Wellness Center to actually produce electricity as opposed to needing to draw power from the grid. His project displayed amazing innovation and resulted in great publicity for the center and for Dennis' work, and he is now successfully pursuing engineering at the University of Washington. His work was a model for how Sustainability can be incorporated into student work and course curricula, and we use his project as an example of how students can get involved with our program in a myriad of different ways. His novel idea was funded by our campus' Sustainability Fund, and supported by our campus coordinator and sustainability committee throughout the process. The bike is going to be temporarily installed at a gym facility at Joint Base Lewis McCord for the month of September, highlighting the idea's potential for larger scale implementation.
