A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
NC State strives to meet its goal of LEED Silver or higher for all new buildings over 20,000 square feet. The design team at NC State’s Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction Services, and Capital Project Management meet with the occupant of a new building to develop the Owner’s Project Requirements. These requirements include a Sustainability Statement. Third party designers are chosen for experience with the building type and also for their experience with LEED and sustainable design. When a third party design team is hired, the design should should be consistent with the Owner’s Project Requirements and the Sustainability Statement. New projects are carefully reviewed to determine how the project has the potential to affect campus sustainability (ie: goals for storm water, energy and/or parking management).
A team of design and construction professionals in the University is creating guidelines for buildings less than 20,000 square feet. From a stair railing replacement, to the renovation of a building wing, the green building guidelines will be flexible enough to have relevance for many types of projects.
Data source(s) and notes about the submission:

- SB 668 (energy and water reduction in state buildings)
- NC State's signature of the American University and College Climate Commitment and associated LEED Silver mandate
- NC State's Design and Construction Guidelines
- NC State's Sustainability Strategic Plan
