In the 2013-2016 Strategic Plan, Niagara College adopted two other sustainability goals hat have not been covered in other areas thus far. They include the goal reducing paper consumption by 50% (absolute) by 2016 and achieving AASHE STARS Bronze under the Operational Excellence strategic priority as how the goal of Leading edge sustainable and accessible learning environments will be measured.

Niagara College has adopted the Brundtland Commission definition of sustainable development - meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Found within Niagara College's 2013-2016 Strategic Plan, are values that support the growth and improvement of a sustainable culture. The Plan is built on three strategic priorities: Unparalleled student experience and satisfaction; Leading innovation and research; and Operational excellence. Under the Operational Excellence priority, the strategy of integrating and incorporating environmental sustainability into programs and operations can help Niagara College achieve the goal of providing leading-edge sustainable and accessible learning environments.

By 2016, Niagara College hopes to meet the five sustainability targets which include,

Electricity Consumption 10% Reduction;
Greenhouse Gas Emissions 10% Reduction;
Waste Generation 65% Diversion;
Rate Water consumption 5% Reduction;
Paper Consumption 50% Reduction

In addition, the college had recognized the goal to achieve a bronze level in the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) from the Association of Advancement in Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), an International benchmark.
