A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
Dan Patterson, President of Niagara College had the opportunity to provide a submission as part of the Ontario government public policy process in response to the "Our Region, Our Community, Our Home - A Discussion Document for the 2015 Co-ordinated Review" on behalf of Niagara College. The review focuses on land use planning in relation to the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Greenbelt Plan, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan, and the Niagara Escarpment Plan.
Niagara College's submission focused on the aspects of the review that Niagara College has an interest in and a desire to encourage. Niagara College's submission highlights that Niagara College is impacted by the land use planning directions within these plans because of having a campus within a Biosphere Reserve. Furthermore, Niagara College has academic programs in horticulture, ecological restoration, tourism and hospitality, culinary and more have the Greenbelt and the Niagara Escarpment Plan areas as living laboratories, meaning we are graduating future leaders who have an affinity for the continued protection and enhancement of these areas. With that in mind, the submission emphasized that land use policy needs to align with other Provincial expectations, including the expectations the Province has for post-secondary institutions.
