Environmental Management and Assessment

This innovative, in-demand program will equip students with specialized skills that can marketed immediately to business, industry, government, consultants and environmental associations. Opportunities for graduates include corporate greening/carbon management, development of environmental management systems, environmental assessment and risk management, waste management, environmental site assessment, environmental compliance, integrated environmental management, pollution prevention and control. This program is nationally accredited by ECO Canada for excellence in curriculum in compliance with the Canadian National Occupational Standards (NOS). This program was first of its kind in Canada and is taught at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, which boasts 46 hectares (113 acres) including ecological “living labs” acting as environmental monitoring facilities. The college’s School of Horticultural and Environmental Studies offers this program with a faculty team having a combined total of over 60 years of environmental experience. The industry internships / projects provide practical experience (1 day per week for 12 weeks), providing students valuable hands on skill building opportunities in a variety of fields. Graduates with relevant experience can also seek EP (Environmental Professional) certification through ECO Canada.

Ecosystem Restoration

In today’s highly industrialized world, the need to restore and manage disturbed ecosystems is receiving more and more attention. Earn this graduate certificate and secure a competitive advantage in the environmental labour market including conservation authorities; municipal, provincial and federal government agencies; NGOs; engineering and consulting firms. Opportunities for graduates include ecological restoration practitioner, environmental manager, habitat biologist, natural heritage specialist, watershed stewardship coordinator, species at risk, and invasives management specialist. At Niagara College the Ecosystem Restoration program builds on university/college graduate education with a hands-on, boot-on focus. Students participate in community based, year-long ecological restoration projects, which build intensive training in field techniques, project management and communication skills. The program is located on a unique ecological campus, which includes the Wetland Ridge Trail and part of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO designated World Biosphere Reserve.
