A brief description of the native plant program, policy, or practice:
Niagara College does prioritize native species on site. At the Welland Campus the Green Lung Plan was developed as a landscape strategy to increase sustainability and naturalization on site. The plan focuses on restoring regional plant communities including meadow, Carolinian forest and wetland communities. The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus landscape strategy, titled The Campus as a Living Lab, has similar principles and focuses on creating natural habitats including native species. The Niagara-on-the-Lake campus sits at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment, a designated world biosphere reserve, so it is important Niagara College prioritizes native species to assist in the protection of this reserve.
