Sustainability office(s)
A brief description of each sustainability office:
The NYU Office of Sustainability leads the University-wide effort to build a healthier and more sustainable future. The Office of Sustainability guides the strategy and programs to achieve NYU’s climate goals, which include achieving carbon neutrality in buildings and energy by 2040 and a 25% reduction in emissions from food purchasing by 2030. To support the University in achieving its sustainability goals, the Office works with operational, academic, and administrative partners through programs, trainings, and consultations to implement sustainability strategies across the University.
NYU’s Office of Sustainability reports directly to the Office of the President, with key support from the Provost for whom sustainability is a provostial priority. The Office’s primary goal is to support the University's academic mission. While investing in energy efficiency and electrification of the University’s buildings is crucial to achieving carbon reduction goals, it is also a key to supporting academic excellence. By investing in high-performance buildings to reduce energy waste and improve indoor air quality, the University is simultaneously reducing emissions and generating significant health benefits for the NYU community. Providing an indoor environment that is more comfortable and has cleaner air aids the academic and professional performance of NYU students, faculty, and administrators.

Institution-wide coordination
A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:
Over the past three years, NYU’s Office of Sustainability has continued its efforts to make a healthier and more sustainable University. This has been accomplished through numerous programs, initiatives, and actions taken by the Office of Sustainability in collaboration with departments, units, and individuals across NYU.
NYU has made several operational advancements to reduce carbon emissions. In 2021, NYU released a Climate Action Plan update to highlight operational accomplishments and detail next steps as the University works to achieve climate neutrality in 2040. To accomplish this goal, the University must continue to aggressively reduce energy consumption in University buildings. As of September 2024, the University had over 2.1 million square feet of LEED-certified space globally, including LEED Gold for the newly constructed John A. Paulson Center which opened in January 2023. In 2022, 304 solar panels were installed on the roof of Bobst Library, which provides 18% of Bobst’s power through renewable energy. Most recently in August 2024, NYU reopened the newly renovated Rubin Hall as one of the largest residential Passive House retrofits in the world.
NYU has also pledged and committed to several initiatives in the past three years. In 2024, NYU announced its participation in the NYC Plant Powered Carbon Challenge which aims to reduce food-related greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2030, in September 2023. NYU was recognized for its efforts in creating a sustainable environment for bikers as a Silver-level Bicycle Friendly University by the American League of Bicyclists.
Other accomplishments come from the Office of Sustainability's programs. For example, in April 2023 the Office of Sustainability launched a week-long exploration of what the University would look like once climate neutrality was achieved during 2040 Now. This university-wide campaign featured more than 70 events including exhibitions, competitions, and more. The Office of Sustainability also works to increase sustainability awareness and leadership throughout the University through funding opportunities, outreach, and programming. Some of the recent initiatives launched include Sustainability Event Funding, which provides up to $1,500 for sustainability-related events, a Sustainability Leaders Fellowship, which enables a cohort of students to explore climate advocacy, outreach, and peer-to-peer education, and Classroom Presentations, where we’ve directly reached over 15,000 students over the past two years on sustainability opportunities at NYU.
NYU most recently conducted a University-wide Transportation Survey, in which more than 19,000 community members gave detailed responses on their commutes and transportation needs.
