Which of the following best describes the institution’s approach to rainwater management?:
A brief description of the institution’s green infrastructure and LID practices:
NYU follows the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) guidelines for stormwater water management based on Chapter 31 of Title 15 of the Rules of the City of New York (RCNY). The guidelines are focused on reducing the stormwater release rate for new construction and redevelopment sites. While the guidelines do not explicitly mention LID practices there is an overlap in terms of how the DEP guidelines are implemented. Additionally, NYU has a LEED Silver standard for new construction and major renovations. LEED practices ensure that the best practices of low impact development and stormwater management are applied to new construction and major renovation projects. NYU has 11 acres of green space with over 70 distinct outdoor spaces including 10 rooftop gardens/green roofs and a native woodland garden that support LID principles in managing natural stormwater flow in some of the densest parts of NYC.
