The Green Grants program was established to support members of the NYU community in pursuing projects that improve the university's operational environmental performance, foster environmental literacy and community engagement, advance applied research and design, expand sustainability learning opportunities, and demonstrate the viability of best practices and technologies for sustainability. Any current student, faculty, administrator, or staff member can apply.


A brief description of the multi-stakeholder decision-making process used to determine which projects receive funding through the sustainability projects fund:

The Green Grants Committee consists of students, faculty, and administrators who have expertise in project development, engagement, campus operations, research and design, and/or academic research. The Committee is tasked with reviewing projects to assess their impact, feasibility, and their ability to achieve sustainability objectives. 

The Core Committee meets once per semester after a Green Grants deadline and uses the following criteria to evaluate whether to award funds: relevancy in addressing an issue or problem pertaining to sustainability, how qualified the applicant is to successfully implement and complete the project, methodology, timeline, budget, impact, and institutionalization of the project. In addition, Subject Matter Experts, review projects pertaining to their area of expertise on an ad-hoc basis. Their comments are shared with the Core Committee during the proposal review meeting.
