In addition to NYU Human Resources processes, the Office of Sustainability makes specific efforts to recruit from underrepresented groups by expanding the places vacant positions within the Office of Sustainability are posted. This includes reaching out directly to job boards at historically black colleges and universities, affinity groups, and industry-specific job sites.

The Environmental and Racial Justice Network Summit brings faculty, researchers, students, and other community member advocates together to explore the connections between racial and environmental justice and is organized by NYU’s Office of Sustainability alongside the Office of Global Inclusion. 

In 2024, the ERJN Spring Summit featured an in-person reception with a fire-side chat focusing on food justice, and a virtual summit featuring key speakers and panelists focusing on a range of environmental and racial justice topics. Speakers included figures such as Dr. Robert Bullard who is credited as being the ‘Father of Environmental Justice, and Jasmine Davenport, a Senior Advisor for Climate Justice at the EPA. 

The Office of Sustainability and Office of Global Inclusion worked in partnership to bring in key speakers, organize the events, ensure accessibility and inclusivity for the events, and promote the event to the entire NYU community.

Documentation of the formal DEI and/or environmental or social justice responsibilities:

A staff member of the Office of Sustainability co-chairs the Environmental and Racial Justice Network. This initiative aims to address the connection between racial and environmental justice by creating a space to explore:

  • Completed projects, initiatives, and works-in-progress at the intersections of environmental and racial justice

  • Current and future opportunities to advance research and scholarship on environmental and racial justice, including funding resources, calls for proposals, calls for papers, conferences, etc.

  • Ongoing awareness and opportunities to share research regarding the connections between COVID-19 and the disproportionate impact on vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Along with monthly convenings of the network, the Office of Sustainability hosts an annual summit on rotating topics and features the work of its members who are addressing environmental and racial justice in their research.
