Has the institution banned or eliminated the on-site sales and distribution of at least one type of single-use disposable plastic?:
A brief description of the single-use disposable plastics that have been banned or eliminated:
NYU has eliminated the use of single-use foam food containers. Dining Services offers a reusable take out container along with compostable containers, cups, and cutlery for food taken out. Organics collection that accepts compostable cups and cutlery is available in NYU dining halls, the Kimmel Center, and for residents at select residential halls allowing for proper disposal of the compostable containers and cutlery. NYU’s elimination of single-use foam food containers aligns with a similar New York City prohibition on single-use foam containers dating to January 1, 2019.
In addition, NYU has eliminated plastic carryout bags. NYU retail stores allow customers to use reusable bags and provide a paper bag for a fee that can be recycled in the mixed recycling bins located throughout campus. Similarly, NYU’s actions align with a plastic bag ban that was enacted by New York State on March 1, 2020.
