A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:

NYU’s Office of Institutional Research (IR) used internal databases to provide this inventory.

Overarching parameters:

  • The database includes researchers from AY22 - AY24.

  • Researchers from NYU Abu Dhabi, NYU Shanghai, NYU Langone, which are outside the institutional boundary of this submission, are excluded. Researchers from NYU Grossman School of Medicine are also excluded since the School of Medicine tabulates their researchers in a different way than the rest of the NYU community (many of these researchers are associated with NYU Langone).

  • The database only includes full time faculty - as they conduct research as part of their responsibilities - and does not include adjunct faculty.

NYU’s Office of Institutional Research calculated the total number of employees that conduct research by 1) identifying all faculty that engaged in research between 2022 - 2024 and 2) identifying all tenured and tenure-track faculty that taught a course at NYU between 2022 - 2024. To calculate the number of employees engaged in sustainability research, IR 1) identified all faculty that conducted research on a sustainability keyword (see “Sustainability Related Keywords” in the inventory for the full list of keywords) and 2) identified all faculty that taught a course on one of the sustainability keywords.

The list of sustainability related keywords was drawn from NYU’s previous submission along with AASHE’s suggested keywords for sustainability course and research inventories.

IR identified 1,022 employees engaged in sustainability research. QA/QC entailed reviewing all faculty that taught a class on sustainability to make sure that they actually conducted research within the last three years. NYU found that 27 faculty members that taught a course on sustainability did not conduct research within the past 3 years and as a result, these faculty members were removed from this list. Additional QA/QC entailed reviewing 105 sustainability researchers (10%) for false positives. 7 researchers (6.67%) were deemed to be false positives, so NYU deducted 6.67% (67 researchers) from the 995 sustainability researchers initially found.

IR’s internal database tracks NYU department per employee, so the unique list of all departments was easily identifiable as were the departments of those that conduct sustainability research. The total list of departments include those that have more than one employee.
