NYU frequently works with local leaders and testifies before hearings to advocate for more sustainable policies in New York City. For example, in December 2018 CSO Cecil Scheib testified before the New York City Committee on Environmental Protection in support of legislation aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to buildings in the city. This testimony ultimately influenced the creation of New York City's Climate Mobilization Act, which was passed in 2019 and sets carbon limits for tens of thousands of buildings in New York City.

NYU has supported the National March for Science through the NYU Office of Sustainability Green Grants program as well as the University's donations to support the national efforts of the organization. The March for Science champions robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. They are a diverse, nonpartisan group that calls for science that upholds the common good, and for political leaders and policymakers to enact evidence-based policies in the public interest. Many of their efforts focus on supporting science focused on climate change and finding solutions to this challenge.
NYU also joined the "We Are Still In" campaign in which signatories from across America representing businesses, universities, government leaders, and individuals pledge to continue the global commitment of the Paris Agreement to reduce global emission which impact climate change. NYU supports these efforts to reduce emissions through numerous initiatives, and this pledge reinforces the University's commitment to sustainability.
At the federal level, NYU advocates for research funding that goes into all aspects of research, including sustainability. As an example, NYU has advocated for National Science Foundation funding that supports climate change research.
