A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :
Data for this submission was provided by NYU’s Office of the University Registrar for Academic Years from 2016 to 2018 (3 year span). In picking out classes that are sustainability-focused or sustainability-themed, sustainability subject matter experts from within the University used the topics below as guides for filtering for sustainability or sustainability-related courses.
(1) Environment: human interaction with the environment, green technology, preservation and conservation, energy
(2) Social: inequality, economic development, social change, human rights, education, ethics, energy
(3) Governance: peacekeeping, ethics, law, public policy
The resulting list of courses was further narrowed by the group to create the list of sustainability and sustainability related courses.
In order to further narrow the list to 'sustainability-focused' and 'sustainability-related' courses, a keyword search was performed on course titles for likely sustainability-focused terms. The keywords were chosen based on AASHE's credit guidance, but is not considered an exhaustive list of sustainability terms.
Keywords:
Sustainability
Sustainable
Environmental
Climate change
Global warming
Renewable energy
Green Chemistry

Poverty
All other remaining courses that were selected by the subject matter experts but did not contain any of the above keywords were deemed 'sustainability-related'.
