A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
The NYU Safety Policy Manual for Computer Equipment Disposal and Surplus outlines the policies to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly. NYU disposes of computers and other e-wastes domestically, in compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
Computers, computer components, TVs and electronics, light bulbs, and paint are collected within each building and disposed of properly by the Environmental Health and Safety Department.
Additionally, through the Recycling Department's "Technoscrap" program, the following non-hazardous electronic wastes may be recycled:
Ink and toner cartridges, batteries, jewel cases, video tapes, cassettes, diskettes, CDs, DVDs and all type of cables and wires/wiring. Offices can have a technoscrap collection bin delivered (once delivered this bin will be emptied automatically every week), or schedule one-time pick ups of technoscrap items.
