New Mexico State University has representation on the Mesilla Valley MPO Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) along with the Bicycle & Pedestrian Facilities Committee (BPAC) where infrastructure improvements are advocated for in order to promote the use of alternative transportation.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:
Under the Director of Governmental Affairs, the Student Advocacy Board (SAB) serves as the voice of NMSU students in Santa Fe during the legislative sessions. The board seeks to advocate for issues that are of particular importance to students. Past issues include the long-term solvency of the New Mexico Lottery Scholarship, capital outlay for campus projects, and faculty compensation. The board is made up of full time students from a diverse background and includes representation from all colleges at NMSU. Many of the capital outlay projects are related to improved infrastructure increasing energy efficiency along with support for a walkable/bikable campus community.
