A brief description of the institution’s workplace health and safety initiatives, including how workers are engaged in monitoring and advising on health and safety programs:
NMSU encourages and supports all programs that promote safety, good health, and well-being of all NMSU employees as well as students and visitors. Good environmental, health and safety practices are the responsibility of each person on the NMSU campus. For an entire overview of the Environmental, Health and Safety Program at NMSU, please view the Employee Safety Handbook. The NMSU Safety Policy and Safety Vision, can be viewed at the EH&S website at http://safety.nmsu.edu. The NMSU Loss Prevention and Control Program is a comprehensive and systematic approach to the many facets of safety and environmental protection. Its purpose is to provide a safe and healthy environment for the University community and reduce the number, severity and potential costs of injuries, illnesses and harmful activities. Loss prevention generally includes proactive measures to prevent or abate potential risks. This may be in the form of improved safety and training programs; implementing new, less hazardous processes; programs/projects to reduce injuries and property loss; and/ or general safety enhancements. Loss control is the act of reducing severity by identifying the factors that aggravate or increase a loss and taking proactive measures to lessen the effects of those factors. If an employee has a safety concern and would like to report the concern anonymously, NMSU has provided a Confidential Reporting Line via EthicsPoint to report these concerns. Injury and Illness reporting guidance, as well as any other safety reporting guidance, can be found on the EH&S website. Employees are reminded to report work-related injuries and illness to their supervisor. In 2015, 90% of supervisors completed a Supervisor Accident Investigation Report and determined cause of the incident and what mitigation steps should be taken. EH&S reviews each report of injury or illness and provides recommendations to supervisor. EH&S provides extensive inspections of workplace conditions, reviews incidents and comprehensive safety training for our custodian, skill workers, agricultural workers and academic employees (facutuly, lab workers, research assistants and graduate students)
