The City of Las Cruces (the City) Sustainability Officer partners closely with the NMSU Sustainability Manager on many projects. For the last two years, The City has been working on attaining a STAR Community rating. NMSU faculty and staff as well as the sustainability manager have taken part in meetings, both public and private, to help the City achieve this goal. In October 2015 The City was awarded a three-star rating. Even after the rating was achieved, further participation in City events for STAR Communities have taken place, such as this on March 2016: http://www.starcommunities.org/star-updates/city-of-las-cruces-nm-holds-sustainable-community-workshop-on-earth-day/

Since the beginning of the Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce in Las Cruces, the Office of Sustainability (OoS) has been a member. The manager of the OoS attends monthly meetings and actively participates. The manager has also spoken at two events in the last six years about sustainability activities and initiatives at NMSU, as well as recruits members for the Green Chamber.

The City of Las Cruces has brought the Bicycle Friendly Community task force back to life as of summer 2016. After receiving a Bronze rating from the League of American Bicyclists, the City of Las Cruces Planning Department is continuing its work on getting Silver, the next higher rating. New Mexico State University has two employees on the task force (the university has a Bronze rating as a Bicycle Friendly University) since we've been through this before. NMSU shares 1.5 miles of city street, University Avenue, and we partner closely on making sure that we each benefit from planning on both side of the street.
