A brief description of the event(s):
EARTH DAY: OASIS (Organization of Aggie Students Inspiring Sustainability), one of NMSU's student groups, holds an Earth Day event every year. 2011 was the fourth year and the most successful yet. The City of Las Cruces donates $3,000 to the effort and lets OASIS use one of our City parks. We have booths, local food vendors, live music, speakers and demonstrations on sustainability. OASIS Purpose Statement 1. To generate awareness regarding sustainable practices 2. To network within Las Cruces (city and campus) in order to engage the community and promote green" ethics 3. To focus on agricultural practices, recycling, economic sustainability, community education/awareness, and equality RECYCLEMANIA NMSU has been among the top five winners of Recyclemania for the last three years. Our Recycling Department gets the students involved from Housing, Auxiliary Services, OASIS, ESSO (Environmental Science Student Organization), as well as faculty and staff across campus. The students actively participate in every way possible from Kick-Off day to the last day event. The students do tabling, chalking events, and even invite our drink-vendor (Coca-cola) to participate with big recycling parties. This year we asked an art student to make "Mr. Recyclemaniac" - a life size man made out of aluminum cans. http://www.nmsu.edu/aggierecycling/ On a monthly basis we have the NMSU all-volunteer Sustainability Council that students attend (along with faculty and staff). They are asked to present what they are doing for greening NMSU campus. It is a well-attended meeting. Currently students are a) trying to get an in-vessel composting system installed, b)are working on getting a $5 fee added to student fees that will go only toward sustainability issues, c) planning the sustainability film series for fall semester, d) touring our water treaatment facility, and many others. RECYCLE AMERICA DAY during New Mexico Recycling Awareness Month (November 2011): Through our Solid Waste and Recycling Department the students are actively involved in "Recycle New Mexico" and "Recycle America Day" which take place during the month of November. We have participated in this program for at least the last four years. http://recyclenewmexico.com/
