A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about student commuting:
The Office of Sustainability sent out a commuting survey open to all students, faculty, and staff. The data from the survey were cleaned per the following in order to get the sample size of 401 samples:
- All on-campus residents that had walking as a part of their commute were considered.
- The records(off-campus) in which students claimed to be commuting for more than 16 times a week(i.e 20,25 and more) were removed as its not feasible.
- The records in which the respondent failed to mention the amount of average trips he/she makes per week were removed considering that lack of that mention will not give a certain value of how much emission is being made by him/her.
From the remaining data, the percentage of people that commuted via sustainable transportations (which included carpooling, walking, using zero-emissions vehicles, bikes, public buses, commuter rail, light rail) was determined.

A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
The Office of Sustainability sent out a commuting survey open to all students, faculty, and staff. The data for faculty & staff were cleaned separately. After going through all the sanity checks, the data for faculty was found to have no error. Out of total faculty, 32% used sustainable modes of transportation. For the staff, after removing errors, from a sample size of 259 samples, data showed 19% of the staff used sustainable modes of transportation.
