Dongmen Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Platform
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
This project engaged the Hsinchu Dongmen market in 2015, cooperated with Hsinchu City Government and private organizations to promote the revitalization of the idled market. By founding "Khuimng Studio," the project team directly created a work based on the third floor of the market for maintaining interaction with old store owners inside and assisting local youth to enter the market to start
new businesses. Khuimng Studio also helps other universities and organizations to enter the market to promote courses and activities which are related to market issues. This project establishes, expands, and connects the network of Hsinchu Dongmen Market, which has entered its sixth year.
Different from the common practice by courses and activities, this project focuses on creating a supportive platform for long-term companionship. Through the establishment of the Khuimng Studio, the project team is able to engage the daily life of the Dongmen Market without pre-determined goals, then becoming a part of the field. In addition, the project team proposed to revitalize the market
by "youth innovation and entrepreneurship," successfully attracting local youth and transforming the idle market into a youth hub. Dongmen Market has been successfully revitalized. The Dongmen Youth Hub was launched in 2018, attracting many local young entrepreneurs to start their businesses. As of April 2020, the Dongmen Market has stationed 54 new stores and activated 85 idled stalls, accounting for 24% of the total numbers. At the same time, the Hsinchu City Government’s policy on the Dongmen Market has changed from demolition in 2013 to the investment of 2 million in 2017 to create the youth hub. In 2019, the government announced an additional investment of 43.5 million. In 2020, it was increased to 58 million to renew the old building structure. The results can be seen as the impact of the university’s local practice, promoting the achievement of value creation by local departments.
