Majors, degrees and certificate programs

Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree, or certificate program for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate degree program:
Program of Education for Sustainable Development (Interdisciplinary Program of Education, College of Education)

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
“Program of Education for Sustainable Development” is the first interdisciplinary program in Taiwan to focus on the United Nations Sustainable Development Education’s innovative and interdisciplinary framework. The wide range of course offerings emphasizes both globalization and localization, including sustainable development literacy, environmental survey and planning, resource analysis, and environmental policy to sustainable development and resource management. This innovative and interdisciplinary program aims to promote the sustainable development of the environment we live in, deconstruct the complex human and environmental systems from all aspects of cross-scale, and use integrated thinking to solve issues in contemporary sustainable development. Students will respond to the contemporary sustainable development goals (SDGs), and seek education and management methods for sustainable development under climate change. Upon completing the program, students will engage in environmental education, environmental resource management, cultural asset management, and other related fields.

Interdisciplinary Program of Nuclear Science, First Specialty: Energy & Environment (College of Nuclear Science)

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
In the 21st century, the most critical issues facing society are related to energy, climate change, and the environment. To address these issues and the need for the development of society in Taiwan, the College of Nuclear Science founded the Interdisciplinary Program of Nuclear Science (IPNS) in 2009. Each year, IPNS admits 30 undergraduate students and allows students to specialize in two fields of knowledge.
Based on the dual-specialty design, IPNS provides undergraduates a solid knowledge based on low carbon energy, such as nuclear, solar, and hydrogen energy, as well as environmental science and sustainable technology as their first specialty. Students can also develop their second specialty based on their interests by selecting from any core courses in other NTHU departments. The objective is to provide interdisciplinary education for a select group of highly motivated students.

Name of the sustainability-focused, undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
Department of Biomedical Engineering & Environmental Sciences, College of Nuclear Science

None
A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The main research goals of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Sciences (BMES) are to develop clinical techniques and applications based on basic science. Besides focusing on the basic sciences, we also utilize knowledge from chemical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Furthermore, our research fields extend from tissue and organ levels to cellular and molecular levels. Biomedical molecular engineering and biomedical imaging engineering have become the primary research interests in BMES. In line with national development, societal needs, international trends, and to accomplish health and safety objectives, BMES researchers use bio-molecular engineering, nanotechnology, imaging, and AI-assisted image analysis approaches as critical techniques to develop medical and environmental applications.

Minors and concentrations

Does the institution offer one or more sustainability-focused minors or concentrations for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate minor or concentration:
Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Program

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
Sustainable development and climate change are urgent crises facing human society. Environmental management refers to the assessment of the impact of human societies on the environment. Only environmental management can lead to sustainable environmental ecology, human civilization, and social economy.

Creating a sustainable environment requires an interdisciplinary approach. Industries and relevant government departments have had an increasing demand for talents in sustainable development and environmental management.

The Sustainable Development and Environmental Management Program primarily provides students with the free elective subject, cultivates environmental management talents who maintain sustainable development, enhances students' employment prospects, and helps the country move towards sustainable development.

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate minor or concentration (2nd program):
Energy Technology and Sustainable Society Program

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration (2nd program):
Since the industrial revolution, economic development and energy use has destroyed the global environment. As a result, energy stored on the earth, such as coal, petroleum, and natural gas, will be depleted one day. Therefore, seeking alternative energy sources and developing energy-saving devices is very important in the future. Our objective is for students to understand the issues and eventually have an influential role in protecting the earth.
