A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:

For fulfilling the university's social responsibility to its neighbor communities, the vice president of the university has led a University Social Responsibility (USR) project to work with the local community (Gu-zhuan Community Development Association, Taipei City) to build a center of plastics reduction. The center has advocated the Taipei City's policy of plastics reduction and implemented many projects to help nearby communities to decrease carbon emissions. One well received project was the “borrow cups” with Starbucks for the nearby communities during the summer of 2021. Starbucks offered discounts for local community residents when they used reusable cups to order coffee.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:

The NTNU has been involved in promoting sustainable campus and green university advocacy for a long time. The president of NTNU led 25 universities of Taiwan to sign the Talloires Declaration and established the Union of Green University of Taiwan in 2014. Being the first term president of the union, the NTNU has devoted to the movement of sustainable campus. In responding to the Act of Occupational Safety and Health, the president of NTNU signed the “NTNU Declaration of Environmental Safety and Health” in 2021. The university pledges to establish a management system in accordance with prevailing regulations on environmental protection, workplace safety, and occupational safety, and participate with the Union of Green University to improve campus safety and health.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:

With the purpose of promoting citizens’ Sustainable Development literacy, the Taiwan Environmental Education Act was passed in 2010 and has been implemented for more than 10 years. The Sustainable Development Center of NTNU, in association with the Chinese Society of Environmental Education, conducted several meetings in 2021 to review the achievements and impacts of the Taiwan Environmental Education Act and offered some suggestions for enhancing citizens’ literacy for sustainability. The NTNU has engaged in promoting education for sustainable development for a long time. The university advocated the importance of Environmental Education Act and worked with legislators, Environmental Protection Administration(EPA), and Ministry of Education(MOE) to pass the ACT in 2010. The university has continuously help monitoring and reviewing the implementation of the Environmental Education Act since 2011.

Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the international level:

To advocate the importance of climate action of COP 26 at Glasgow, U.K., NTNU and the University of Glasgow held an international conference on climate action on October 1, 2021. The conference was hosted by Prof. Cheng-Chih Wu, the president of NTNU, and featured a keynote speech by Prof. Sir Anton Muscatelli, the president of University of Glasgow, on “The unique role of Universities in promoting Sustainable Development” and a speech by Prof. Tzu-Chau Chang, the director of Sustainable Development Center, on “Working with Taiwan government to improve student’s competencies of climate action through national education of climate change”. To follow the advocacy of climate action of COP 26, the president of NTNU has claimed to be a "net-zero emissions" university in 2050 and will present its pathways and strategies by 2022.
