A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Student Orientation is a two-day event that logistically explore sustainable practices to reduce waste and source locally. The event also provides information on environmental, social and economic sustainability in a variety of platforms.
- Compostable materials and local food sourced for events (4 food events for up to 2,000 people)
- Water trucks and reusable water bottles provided at large outdoor events
- Nearly all paper flyers/brochures banned from SWAG bags for students
- Do It Green, a third party environmental educational consultant was contracted to help divert waste from the landfill by educating new students on to properly sort and dispose of their waste
- Representatives on site from Waste Management that provided an interactive game to educate students about waste disposal and materials
- Student clubs focused on environmental, social and economic sustainability set-up on campus to recruit students share information about their cause at part of the Clubs and Campus expo
- Several workshops were hosted with content including mental health supports, diversity, consent, and supports for the LGBTQA+ community
- Training for all orientation leaders included information how to properly dispose of waste as well as consent, diversity and accessibility training
- The tour script for all students included the details about our waste management program and details of the LEEDS certified buildings
