A brief description of how the literacy assessment was developed and/or when it was adopted:
The first MRU Sustainability Literacy & Culture Assessment was developed by members of the Sustainable MRU committee in August 2019 to determine trends in understanding, behaviours, and attitudes, and use the results for education and planning. Questions were sourced from other post-secondary sustainability literacy assessments and research conducted on sustainability cultural indicators.
The second literacy assessment was conducted in the Spring of 2021.
The third literacy assessment was conducted in Fall of 2022. The questions remained the same in the literacy section to ensure comparability across years.
A brief description of how a representative sample was reached (if applicable) and how the assessment(s) were administered :
The survey was administered at the Fall 2022 Campus Sustainability Fair over one day in October in a high-traffic area on campus. The survey was also advertised to all staff, students, and faculty on the MyMRU portal, and in the campus community newletter, OurCommunity, over a one-month period. Finally, a snowball method was used where the survey was sent to faculty and asked to be distributed in classes. The sample demographics match the MRU campus.
A brief summary of results from the literacy assessment(s):
76% of respondents correctly identified the three components of sustainability and over 80% identified the main drivers of humanity's ecological footprint. On topics such as sustainable forest management, ozone layer, and wetlands respondents were well informed and scored highly (+70%). In areas such as ocean temperature, distribution of global warming, and how the greenhouse effect works scores were lower (>50%). Overall respondents scored highly on the literacy assessment and areas for improved sustainability programming were identified.
