MSU is a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System co-permittee with the City of Bozeman. Together we have a Stormwater management Plan as required by the EPA and administered by our State Department of Environmental Quality.The basic tenets of our program are to reduce water quantity and preserve/improve water quality, On campus examples include injection wells, detention ponds, detention pond systems including a biological component and mechanical treatment,

MSU is a co-permittee on the City of Bozeman's MS4 permit and, as such, is required to directly manage compliance and regulatory standards within that permit. The State Department of Environmental Quality along with the EPA and state t and co-permittees are currently in the process of re-writing the permit (end of permit cycle) and the supporting policies and plans. MSU's storm water program goals are reducing the quantity of water introduced into the storm water system and improving the quality of water that does enter the system. Retention, detention, and infiltration are the primary strategies used along with best management practices such as street sweeping.
