A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

Student's in the DSEL class take an interdisciplinary approach to developing solutions for complex problems that they see in our community. Students in the Spring 2017 cohort worked to address the issues of food waste at local farms and developing an alternative to animal based proteins. These students developed two startup ventures - Farmented Foods and Cowboy Cricket Farms. Farmented Foods partners with local farmers to provide an alternative use for vegetables that are deemed aesthetically unsuited for retail sale and for excess product. The solution was to develop a new company - Farmented Foods - which provides fermented food products such as curry spiced carrots using local farm's products. Cowboy Cricket Farms is also a start up company which farms bugs for human consumption and develops products ranging from cookies to cricket protein powder using their new protein source.

Both projects took part in a business startup competition held in Missoula. MSU's Blackstone Launchpad helped coach the students for the competition. Cowboy Cricket Farms took first place in the competition and also earned the People’s Choice Award, the Intent to Launch Award and the Manufactured Product Award. Farmented received the Athena Award, the Polymath Award and overall honorable mention. For their efforts, the two teams collectively earned a total of $26,000 out of $53,000 available in price money.
