The ResLife Sustainability Advisory Committee is composed of two resident advisers from each of the seven residence halls on campus, as well as a the resident director of the ResLife program. The Committee meets twice weekly to develop programs to educate and encourage their peers to make sustainable efforts. They organize the recycling programs for the residence halls, have developed competitions to reduce water usage, organized swap tables to reduce waste and regularly implement the use of posters and bulletin boards for education and awareness.
A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
Student educators first go through the selection process to become a resident adviser, which involves the writing of essays and an interview process. Once the resident advisers are selected for each resident hall, those selected get to choose a committee to be a part of that interests them most. A resident advisers then undergo another selection process involving interviews and an application. Two resident advisers are then selected for each residence hall.
A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
All resident advisers receive training at the beginning of the year from the Office of Sustainability regarding sustainable efforts that are being made on campus, the benefits of sustainable practices, and some examples of peer to peer programs that can be implemented. Throughout the year the Office of Sustainability meets with the ResLife Sustainability Advisory Committee to further discuss how to most effectively implement sustainability programs and to further educate the committee members on sustainable practices. The ResLife program also provides leadership education to the resident directors and assists with furthering the effectiveness of their peer to peer education programs.
A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
Funding for the ResLife Sustainability Advisory Committee comes from the ResLife program, which manages the residence halls on campus. The committee submits proposals for specific projects which undergo review. The committee members are receive reimbursement for their efforts as resident advisers, but no additional payment as committee members.
