A brief description of the campus-community council or equivalent body that gives external stakeholders a regular voice in institutional decisions that affect them:
In April of 2019, Mohawk College held its first formal “Mohawk College and Surrounding Communities Outreach Meeting”. Residents from the communities immediately adjacent to Mohawk were invited to attend including Bonnington, Buchanan and Southam.
Representatives from the Ward 8 Neighbourhood Associations (Rolston, Centremount and Gourley Park) were also invited to attend.
Agenda topics included safety for students and residents, traffic and parking management, bylaw enforcement, and Mohawk's Campus Master Plan. Opportunities to support a positive engagement with Mohawk and local residents were discussed, including Community Movie Nights and ongoing partnerships to take care of the Neighbourhood.
While in-person community meetings have been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, the college has continued to engage closely with the Ward 8 Office and the neighbourhood representatives, with the aim to resume in-person meetings of the group and broader community members at least once annually.
A record of the 2019 meeting can be found on the Ward 8 website: https://ward8hamilton.ca/mohawk-college-and-surrounding-communities-outreach-meeting/
