The Sustainability Initiatives Fee (SIF) Committee is a result of the 2014 SIF Agreement in which MOHAWK COLLEGE and the MOHAWK STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (MSA) agreed to the implementation of a Sustainability Initiatives Fee to provide all students of the College with knowledge and skills focused on the advancement of sustainability initiatives; and, that the adoption of sustainable initiatives, principles and practices into the College’s daily operations will continue to enable the College to provide a positive educational and working environment for all students and staff, while remaining a leader in sustainability among other post-secondary institutions; ad, for which a sustainable initiative is defined as a special project, research opportunity, service trial or infrastructure upgrade which will enhance the sustainability of the MSA and the College. The SIF Committee is a model of cooperation between the MSA and Mohawk College for which both parties are committed to in order to support the advancement of sustainability, connected to an enhanced student experience at Mohawk College.

A brief description of each sustainability office:
The Mohawk College Sustainability Office is situated on the Fennell campus, and falls within the perview of the Centre for Climate Change Management (CCCM). In 2011, the Sustainability Office developed the Mohawk College Environmental Management Plan (EMP) which is the leading policy document for achieving sustainability at Mohawk College. In 2016, the Sustainability Office updated the document to become the EMP 2.0. This document reaffirms Mohawk's committement to reducing its impact on the environment and ensure social and financial resiliency while providing opportunities to engage staff, students and the community in an ever growing culture of sustainability. Under normal operating circumstances, the Sustainability Office leads 30 initiatives centered on transportation, energy, waste management, conversation and local food annually.

The Campus Sustainability and Climate Change Office has done so much over the past three years.

2019-2024 assisted in drafting the Energy Conservation & Demand Management
Bee Apriary on campus - 6 healthy hives happily living on campus since summer 2018/19

2019/20 installed central waste sorting stations within the Fennell and Stoney creek Campuses.
2019/20 comprehensive waste signage overhaul across campus

Green fleet management policy

2020/21 developed and launched the Sustainable Leadership Program, a free co-curricular 8-module course.

Revamped the Climate Change Management for Business Micro-Course created for students and employees.

Continued the City School Sprouts Program

2021/22 Named one of Canada's Greenest Employers

Nico's work centres on the development of programming and campus services which make the "sustainable choice" the preferred choice for students and staff. Nico represents Mohawk Sustainability on a number of both internal and external committees/working groups. Nico assists the Manager of Sustainability in the development of strategic plans, workplans, and insitutional reporting.

Amy works to create awareness of sustainability programs and services and establishes a culture of sustainability on campus. She develops and implements educational materials, communications and outreach activities for students, staff and community members. Amy assists the Manager of Sustainability in the development of strategic plan, awards submissions, and engagement-related reporting.
