Canada's Greenest Employers 2021 is an editorial competition organized by the Canada's Top 100 Employers project. This special designation recognizes the employers that lead the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations. These employers have developed exceptional sustainability initiatives – and are attracting people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership. This award grew out of two remarkable speeches given by Al Gore and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at our annual conferences in 2006 and 2007, respectively. Prior to 2009, this award was called "Canada's Most Earth-Friendly Employers".
Mohawk College has taken impressive steps to ensure greater use of alternative transit, oferring discounted transit passes for students, a bicycle loan program, support for carpoolers and an oncampus car sharing service. In addition to adopting LEED building standards for new construction, Mohawk College boasts a number of creative features across the campus from community gardens and rooftop pollinator garden, to water bottle filling stations to accompany a disposable water bottle ban and a unique "Waste Management Zone" in one cafeteria, which features recycling stations and proper place to wash reusable mugs, containers and cutlery. Established in 2011, Mohawk College's Environmental Management Plan committed the College to a 20% carbon reduction target below the 2007 baseline by the year 2020 -- the College exceeded this target 8 years ahead of schedule and through the updated "Environmental Management Plan 2.0", established a revised goal of a 30% reduction below 2007 levels.

Local Food Project
Increasing Local Food Procurement at Ontario’s 24 Colleges is a multi-stakeholder project led by Mohawk College in partnership with the Greenbelt Fund and the Government of Ontario. The project aims to develop a scalable and transferable local food procurement framework for all 24 Ontario colleges. For the project, Mohawk College acted as a mentor to other Ontario Colleges in engaging food services with sustainable procurement best practices. https://www.oncollegefood.com/about
"Campus Carbon Management Initiative
Led by Mohawk College under the umbrella of the Centre for Climate Change Management, the Campus Carbon Management Initiative (CCMI) acts as a catalyst to support Ontario colleges in their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With input from Ontario colleges, Mohawk College has embarked on the development of a digital toolkit specifically designed for college campuses to help accelerate GHG reductions and ensure their sustainability success. https://campuscarbonmgmt.ca/ "
