Name of the campaign:
Sustainability Initiative Fund Idea Bank Campaign

A brief description of the campaign:

The purpose of the Sustainability Initiatives Fund (SIF) is to provide all Mohawk College students with skills and knowledge to encourage greater awareness of environmental sustainability. The adoption of sustainable principles and practices will enable the College to provide a more environmentally conscious learning and working environment, while positioning Mohawk College as a leader in sustainability among post-secondary institutions. The Idea Bank Campaign is focused on collecting student ideas that support the enhancement of sustainability on campus. The top ideas are implemented the following year.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:

The 2020/21 SIF Ideabank campaign was hosted remotely and saw smaller than average turnout. There were over 4316 visits to the website, and 26 feasible ideas submitted.

Winning ideas are selected from the poll of feasible ideas each semester by the SIF Commitee for the Sustainability Office to implement. One such winning idea was PPE mask collection. As a result of this student idea, Mohawk Sustainability worked with Terracycle to deploy single-use mask collection boxes across all campuses. To date over 240,000+ masks have been diverted from landfill. Other winning ideas included: upgrading the secure bike parking cage, funding composting infrastructure in the community garden, and funding a sustainable workshop series.

Name of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Bike Month

A brief description of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Bike Month is a month long celebration of cycling in participating municipalities in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton region. As a Smart Commute employer, Mohawk College participates annually in Bike Month and its keystone event, Bike to Work Day. In 2019, Mohawk Sustainability offered free bike tune ups on campus prior to Bike to Work day. On Bike to Work day refreshments and T-shirts were provided and participants were congratulated for cycling to work or school. Cycling resources were shared on social media and through an outreach booth. Throughout Bike Month, Mohawk Sustainability also engaged staff, faculty and students through photo contest on all the communication platforms. 20+ participants shared photos of themselves cycling to work/school or for fun during the month of June.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):

Mohawk College offered free bike tune ups to 30+ individuals during bike to work day in 2019. This even drove an increase in usage of the Secure Bike Parking Cage. 2019 saw the highest occupancy with over 40 people utilizing the cage daily.
