Zero Carbon Ambassadors Program

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):

The opening of The Joyce Centre for Partnership & Innovation is an important opportunity to engage and educate Mohawk students to use the building in sustainable ways and contribute to the zero carbon goal. The Zero Carbon Ambassadors Program is a network of peer educators responsible for engaging others in creating a net zero Joyce Centre. This program is supported by student program leads hired through the CSEP program - Mohawk College's work-study program. Using peer-to-peer engagement strategies, student leaders will:

- Provide tours of the building,
- Provide information to questions about the building including key features and zero-carbon building design
- Engage all students on energy and building usage
- Promote zero carbon and zero energy practices within the building
- Social media campaigns to promote building features
- Online zero-carbon scavenger hunt for students

*Note: Due to ongoing COVID-related campus restrictions, this program is currently on-hold. Reported data was collected during the Fall Semester 2019-20 Academic Year. We anticipate offering this program year-round in the future.


A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):

The target audience is the entire student body. The Joyce Centre for Partneship & Innovation is a focal point of campus activity. Zero Carbon Ambassadors host "ask me anything" sessions daily at an information desk. Zero Carbon Ambassadors also assisted in offering tours to classes, visitors and industry partners.

Sustainability Student Outreach Assistants

A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):

Each semester (Fall, Winter, Summer) the Sustainability Office hires two outreach assistants. The objective of these paid positions is to support sustainability education to peers through campaigns, outreach events and communications. Student Outreach Assistants work during all weeks that the College is open (i.e. excluding holidays and scheduled closures) - 15 hours per week in the Fall and Winter, and 35 hours per week in the Spring/Summer.


A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (2nd program):

Sustainability Student Outreach Assistants design and facilitate engagement campaigns, events, workshop series. Student workers are expected to both design their own educational initiatives, and to support Sustainability Office peer-peer events such as Greening Orientation, the Idea Bank campaign, and workshop series. During the pandemic, a primary method of reaching the target audience is via digital communications, blog posts and social media.

The Mohawk Students' Association provides peer-to-peer outreach through class representatives, advocacy, and maintaining an open door policy for all students.
